Abstract and Works Cited

Abstract:

Mental illness has been stigmatized and neglected for quite some time pre-covid. This paper will explore the factors that contribute to mental illness in college students and how covid has made mental illness a universal issue within college students. There will be a focus on the challenges that go along with social isolation due to covid. The paper is organized to explain the types of people most affected during this time and the driving force behind other present issues due to social isolation.

Initial topic Idea

     The topic I am considering to explore is: How isolation due to COVID-19 effects students mental health. I want to focus on this topic because I am personally really curious how this pandemic has effected students mentally on a larger scale. I know people as well who did not respond positively to the initial isolation and I just want to know more about others as well. Another topic that came to mind after lecture today was something about how coming from a more affluent family benefits your college experience vs coming from a less affluent family. This topic came of interest to me because after doing the reading it really just opened my eyes on the disadvantages that less affluent students experience and I would love to know more about it. Coming from a less affluent family, I feel like I can really resonate with the topic and have a strong opinion towards it. I still do not know for sure what will be best, but excited to hear back from you!!

This study examines the binding mental health issues that are associated with COVID-19 and focus on the effect it has on college students. It included students' concerns for loved ones' health, difficulty with concentration, sleep patterns, social isolation, academic performance, eating, living environment, financial difficulties, depressive and suicidal thoughts. These researchers thought it was very important to evaluate this group of people because it is a large group that is vulnerable to mental illness prior to any global pandemic. The cause I am most interested in for my paper is the results specifying the mandated social isolation and distance and its effect on these college students.
